Ghana Rugby holds U-15 Seven’s Tournaments 2021

The Ghana Rugby Football Union hosted a U15 Boys/Girls 7s tournament at the St. Thomas Aquinas School, Accra. These tournaments are being held in all the zones of the Union (GARA, CENT WEST, and NRRA).

Since the devastating Covid 19 didn’t only frustrate business and schools around the globe but also affected all sporting activities, the aim of the tournament was to introduce a GIR (Getting into Rugby) championship which will help develop players for the future.

Nine (9) boys teams and 7 girls teams represented from the various communities namely; William Wilberforce Int. Community. Yes Yes, Future Leaders Hunters Youth. Yes Yes, Kanda Cluster Comm. This was for the girl's division but in the boy's category, teams like Abubakar Sadique Islamic, Salas Community, St. Francis, Sowah Din Community, Islamic Institute Community, and Aggrey Memorial Community.

The Ghana Rugby Football Union understands that Covid-19 is real, tested more than 400 times in the past 12 months.

Also, Instructions have also been given to observe all the Covid 19 protocols by observing social distancing, washing our hands, taking the vitamins (C, Zinc) to boost systems.

The President of Greater Accra Rugby Association Mr. Aziz Issah graced the occasion.

The match commissioner of the tournament was Mr. Lovemore Kuzarera who is the Head Coach of Ghana Rugby followed by the referee of the tournament Mr. Jeffery Chiwanda and assisted by Kofi Montchon/ Paulina Yaa Mensah who both are players practicing refereeing.

At the end of the day, Islamic Institute Community Boys won in the boy’s competition and St. Francis Girls won the girl’s competition.

The event according to the President and Board Chairman of Ghana Rugby, Herbert Mensah was supported by Africa Rugby (who allocated €1,500 for all the events) and Society Generale Bank.

Rafatu Inusah who was responsible for the event commended the coaches, development officers, and volunteers in their efforts to bring the boys and girls from their various communities to participate in this tournament (Anita Attieku, Apalo Christian, Francis Addy, Mohammed Iddrisu, Sandra Odame, Mary Plange, and Rita Afelibiik).

Mr. Mensah confirmed that GIR tournaments are planned for the foreseeable future and urged the principal organizers of these Tournament events Ms. Inusah Rafatu (Educator and Zone 1 coordinator) and Mr Steve (National Coordinator) to expand the program..
