The Ghana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), in collaboration with the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) Women’s Commission, hosted a comprehensive Breast Cancer Awareness event featuring public education and voluntary screening at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium.
The event, held on Saturday 10th October 2026 at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium, brought together about 150 participants made up of players, educators, community members and other sports stakeholders for a day dedicated to preventive health, wellness, and community engagement and fun activities under the dual banners of the World Health Organisation (WHO)’s message; “Every story is unique, every journey matters” and the Ghana Health Service (GHS)’s call to action, “Early Action, Better Outcome”.
Proceedings commenced with participant registration, followed by an opening address from the President of the GRFU, Ms. Rafatu Inusah who emphasised the critical importance of early detection and urged all to treat breast cancer prevention as a life-saving priority.
The health education seminar and screening ‘clinic’ were led by Ms. Grace Essien of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge), who serves as Head of Medical for the GRFU and a World Rugby First Aid in Rugby (FAIR) Educator. She was assisted by Ms. Wilhelmina Kassah Atutornu, founder of Wilekas Massage and a certified World Rugby Level 2 Medic. Together, they educated participants on self-examinations, risk factors, and the vital role of regular clinical evaluations. Participants. The session also featured an open Q&A segment giving participants the opportunity to ask questions, clarify misconceptions and receive expert medical guidance.
Following the health educational sessions, the participants engaged in a lineup of team bonding activities with the highlight being a T1 Rugby tournament (World Rugby’s non-contact format designed for universal participation). Four teams battled across two preliminary matches, climaxing in lively playoffs for third place and the championship trophy.
The afternoon also featured classic recreational games, including a lime-and-spoon race, a bottle-flip challenge, and a highly competitive sack race in which the GRFU President joined participants on the field.
Corporate partners of the GRFU helped elevate the festive atmosphere. Indomie set up an on-site culinary station to serve fresh, hot meals to participants and attendees, complemented by refreshments and pastries provided by the GRFU. Through the support of Sunda International (Softcare), Kivo, and Indomie, everybody present, including ground support staff, security personnel, and technical crews received gift packages and product hampers.
Notable dignitaries in attendance included representatives from the GOC Women’s Commission, led by Madam Helene, Ms. Serwaa Hillary of Euracare Medical Centre, teachers from the Ayawaso East, West, and Central municipalities; GRFU board directors; players from the national men’s and women’s rugby squads (The Eagles); and community delegations from Nima and Madina.
